Twelve African Songs for Solo Voice and Piano - 5. HERERO FOLKTALES composed by Fred Onovwerosuoke. For Piano, Voice, Soprano Voice. 21st Century, World, African, Secular. African Music Publishers #AMP12885. Published by African Music Publishers. S0.22539. Herero Folktales weaves three folksongs with what I call “a cohesive rhythmic thread. ” The story of the graceful gallops of the “Himba” herdsman on his horse is punctuated by two lullabies also favorites among the Otjiherero speaking peoples of Namibia. I’ve long been fascinated by dances from Namibia. This piece adapts similar nuance from Herero - Study No. VII from my Twenty-four Studies in African Rhythms, also published by African Music Publishers. It is another beauty representing southern Africa folk tradition of song and what I like to call surrogative or descriptive accompaniment – for instance, the gracefully galloping horse is unmistakable in the piano part.
