Alfred Reed's excellent transcription is taken from a group of 69 "Sacred Airs and Songs" each of which exists only in the form of a single line with figured bass. It is considered to be one of the most haunting and poignant expressions of sorrow and compas sion to be found in all of Western music. Masterful settings for concert band by the venerable Alfred Reed, these works have been scored to achieve richness and beauty without detracting from the textural construction created by Bach himself.
