Extra Information *Patty Smith Hill's authorship of the "Happy Birthday" text is doubtful.
In the collection referenced above, Mildred is credited as the composer and arranger, while Patty is credited as author and adapter of the text. The familiar "Happy Birthday" text is not present in the original publication. It was published in a 1911 volume of song texts with no credit to Patty Hill and in later collections issued prior to the notorious 1935 registration of a piano arrangement by Preston Ware Orem. Likewise, Summy-Birchard and Warner-Chappell have made numerous claims that Patty Hill is the co-composer of the familiar melody (on the basis of a deposition given by Patty Hill four decades after the fact), but again this is not borne out in the credits found in the original volume. If Patty Hill had no hand in the music, the tune is public domain worldwide.

Navigation etc.

  • The score has one vocal line but no indication of how many voices were intended. However, since its original use was for kindergarten, this has been tagged for either a single voice, or multiple voices.
